Amethyst – The Precious Purple Jewel

The gemstone amethyst originated from ancient Greece, where it was translated as “amethystus” meaning not drunken or intoxicated. It is also known as the precious purple jewel and adorned many crowns and prized possessions of rich and powerful monarchs, especially during the Middle Ages. In ancient Egyptian history, gold necklaces and radiant amethyst necklaces were found buried within the tombs. According to the Biblical history of the Old Testament, amethyst was one of the twelve stones chosen to signify the twelve tribes of Israel. It represented the tribe of Dan, one of the sons of Joseph. Amethyst also became a symbol of great humility and modesty during the Renaissance period. Most recently, however, amethyst is thought to contain great psychic powers as they have been uncovered amidst ruins in Mexico and South America. Amethyst plays a vital role in Latin American history because it is often found in the shape of a skull. There has been an astonishing phenomenon surrounding the power of the Amethyst Skull and, even today, the skull is still seen as a conduit of psychic energy.

There are many prevailing spiritual beliefs associated with the amethyst gemstone. It has been known amongst great healers or those who follow New Age or Wicca beliefs that the power of the amethyst can aide in transition, spiritual healing and feelings of peace. Most commonly known and used as a healing stone, it not only helps ease difficult transitions but also aides in transforming vibrational energies from a lower level to a higher level and has the ability to achieve spirituality on various levels of consciousness. It helps its carrier find his or her own path amidst indecisiveness and its brilliant violet color splashes the vast expanses of a dusk-colored sky.

Spiritual awareness is also enhanced by amethyst. It acts as a protector against negative energy and has been useful in navigating through manipulative situations by helping provide the carrier or wearer with a more in-depth perspective, shedding new light on a situation and bringing the carrier or wearer up to a higher spiritual connectivity. Amethyst not only is believed to be crucial for meditation, but it also has a calming effect, which promotes sleep and peaceful rest during times of extreme physical and mental exhaustion. Its healing properties enable balance and alignment for disruption of spiritual energies.

Amethyst is undoubtedly revered as a stone of peace, especially by spiritualists. Because of its tranquil and protective properties, it has been known to treat people who suffer from common issues like low self-esteem, insomnia and addiction and helps those on their path to spiritual enlightenment, allowing for more open states of awareness from within the conscious mind.

The two main characteristics of amethyst, which makes it the gem of tranquil sleep and inspires dreams to fight off sleep disorders, are its capacity to make what has been disturbed ease into a soothing calmness as well as its ability to ease transition. Spiritual healers believe that the amethyst fends off psychic attacks and heals all levels of the mind, body and spirit including that of consciousness. New Age believers see amethyst’s ability to maintain sharp concentration and focus, making its wearer more consciously and spiritually aware. This, in turn, also lulls its wearer into a peaceful sleep, often providing soothing, sound sleep for those who’ve been overworked and overwhelmed.

Evening is representative of sleep and the relationship between amethyst and dreams is a rather fascinating one. According to the belief system of crystal healers, the calming physical and mental aspects of amethyst help to ease the shift between wakeful and sleeping states to fight off sleeplessness. It engages in inspired dreaming, inhibiting dreams in which some sort of life truth is revealed about the dreamer. By enabling this natural form of rest, the growth of one’s psychic development and intuition can begin to take shape. Its qualities have also been known to sometimes reduce sleep disorders like tossing and turning, sleep apnea and snoring.

Purple amethyst is most often used as jewelry such as necklaces, rings and bracelets and has been known to bring about stability and tranquility to the wearer. However, it is most widely recognized as a birthstone for February and will always be known as a powerful healing agent.
