Ambalthinal Devi Temple is a famous temple with many historic backgrounds. It’s situated in heart point of Edakkunnam, a small place in Nooranadu village, Allappuzha district, Kerala.. Edakkunnam, a place with many historic stories and myths. Ambalathinal Devi temple also related to these myths and stories.. The supernatural force worshipped in this temple have the history of years and years.
The myths and history of this temple started from ‘Yakshi’, a goddess who lives in a big forest which spread in this place. This forest called as ‘Yakshiammakavu’. The yakshi in this kavu is very fair, good looking and kind personality. Among the major ‘AshtaYakshi’s’ (Eight yakshi’s) worshipped at different places, yakshi in this place is their Queen. Thus she is very famous through out different places. A small temple also inside the forest to worship this goddess. People in this village and outsiders offer white flowers, lighting, vara podi (a holy food offered to this goddess) and other poojaas. Year’s passes, the temple cause some destruction. People came there rarely. Offering’s from people became less.. Yakshi, the goddess became very angry. She started to attack the people at night , when they pass near to the forest. She killed some people. Even children and women were attacked. Diseases and other natural calamities be spread through out the village. People became afraid. They cannot pass near to the forest because of fear. Days pass Yakshi became more angry.
The villagers met together to take a decision to stop this violence nature of Yakshi. At that time in the south part of that place there is an old Brahmin illam (illam means old brahamin house with special architecture). There a goddess named ’Maha Bhadra Kali’ is worshipped by and old Brahmin man. This goddess is famous about her power. Thus people went to that illam and they prayed that goddess to save their life from the Yakshi. Thus Bhadra Kali arrived Kallumuttam , a place located east to the Yakshiamma kavu. At Kallumuttam there is an aalthra and kulam (pond). She rested there. From that place People invi the Bhdra to Yakshiammakavu. Bhadra kali fighted against this yakshi and Defeat her, After the war yakshi admitted her failure. She prayed Bhadra to save her. Bhadra became very happy, she offer a seat beside her equal priority in worshipping also. Thus people were very happy and the made separate sreekovil (temple) for the two goddesses. Thus the temple named Ambalathinal Temple.
Behind the goddess BhadraKali also have a story. She and her elder sister were worshipped by fishing men and women like people. From that place they to that illam. And her elder Siter went to other place name Pallimukkam. Thus there is a sister relation ship between ambalathinal temple and pallimukkam temple. In the memory of their goddess the fishermen people came to ambalathinal devi temple yearly and they pay offering to their goddess.
The God name Ganpathi who worshipped now in Ambalathinal temple , is the worship god of Aadhikkattu kalari. In this temple goddess Rakshas, Madan , Moorthi, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi are also worshipped here..
