Dying Art of Kalaripayattu – Oldest Martial Art of the World

Kalarickal Ayurveda innovates to use the growing Kerala tourism industry for revival and growth of an ancient and dying martial art - Kalaripayattu

There are few who would connect with the word, KALARIPAYATTU, when reading this but when we mention karate or judo, almost every reader would imagine a color belted white cotton clad fighters. Well to make readers aware, Kalaripayattu is probably one of the oldest martial arts of the world, but due several reasons, has failed to gain the popularity that Judo and Karate enjoy today worldwide. However, this is now being realized by both individuals and organizations in India, that we cannot permit a science and art as rich as this die a slow death of ignorance.

One such organization is Kalarickal Ayurveda. They are aiming to harness the popularity that this beautiful state is gaining on the map of international tourism to advantage for spreading the word about this ancient martial art. Kalarickal Ayurveda is providing displays of the art to people traveling on holiday to Kerala and also provides Kalari training(<a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.kalarickalayurveda.com">Traditional Kerala Ayurvedic treatment and Kalaripayattu with Holiday tour packages in the heart of God's own Country.</a>).

This art has over centuries developed and evolved as a science that incorporates a healing system of kalari and marma treatment basically to deal with the injuries that occurred during practice and otherwise. This healing system borrows a lot from Ayurveda and equally lends to it.

Having evolved over such a great tenure it uses almost 17 different variety of weapons and powers of the human mind and marma points(sensitive points in the body) to develop an all round system of defense and in dire emergency attack.

In conclusion, Kalarickal Ayurveda's initiative to provide holidays to kerala with ayurveda and kalari is a positive step towards saving the great martial art.

Being a part of this community, I would like to draw attention of many to a dying art in kerala, kalaripayattu. It is disturbing to a certain extent to know that almost everybody reading this would know about Judo and karate and when I say Kalari, there would not be many who would understand what it is about.

Well just to let everybody know, I am talking about a dying martial art which is probably the world's oldest and also one of the most advanced.

How can we let our heritage just die a death of ignorance. I travelled to Kerala some time back on a holiday with Kalarickal Ayurveda, which is where I was introduced first time to this art. I got the opportunity to see an amazing display of kalaripayattu and it is hard to believe what you see. The speed, agility and strength this martial art needs, is beyond imagination. Fighters jump to heights of almost 6-8 feet in the air almost effortlessly. <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.kalarickalayurveda.com">Holiday tour packages in Kerala.</a>

What struck me the most was the fact that there is hardly anybody in India and even fewer numbers internationally aware of this. How can we let this happen to us.

Check some details of this at  http://www.kalarickalayurveda.com/kalari.html

I thought of making a beginning by spreading word at this forum.
