Many spiritual seekers are compelled to go across the globe in the pursuit of enlightenment. While traveling to distant places might be right for many people, it is by no means necessary to attain an enlightened consciousness. Enlightenment takes root anywhere on earth provided the seeker is open and ready for higher consciousness. All one needs to do is focus his/her attention and have a willingness to do the work necessary to move forward on a path to enlightenment.
There are many more tools available to practice spirituality than any time in history. There are a plethora of books, magazines, the Internet, television and films. In addition, the practice of meditation/yoga is easy and free. One can sit quietly for a period of time every day, listening to the universe, which is fundamental to a journey within. No exotic place on earth holds more potential for enlightenment than going within. The greatest teacher is one's own life experiences, and they come every day with opportunities for you to learn and grow. When you actively seek enlightenment, you will realize that you have spiritual support from many sources within yourself and community.
However, if you sense you are being called to search for teachers and experiences, then follow your intuition. You might be called to seek experiences in India, Burma, Indonesia or Peru. If you have no desire to seek spiritual experiences in distant lands, this is not an obstacle to your spiritual development. You can confidently stay in one place, knowing that everything you need and do will bring enlightenment in ways you might not have previously considered.
