In order to make a magick spell work the way it?s supposed to, it is first necessary to understand how it is that we create our own realities ? that is to say, how we author our own destinies. To do this we must examine the difference between intent ? which is the mechanism by which we make things happen ? and expectation, which is a drag or brake upon intent. The mystery of intent lies in solving the conundrum that in order for spells and rituals to work, it is necessary to desire the thing with every fiber of our beings; and at the same time, not give the slightest fig whether it comes true or not. Spiritual seekers are often confused by the fact that many religions and spiritual paths advocate losing all desire; the question then is, what zest or spice would life have left? In point of fact it isn?t desire which spiritual seekers must eradicate, but expectation. Expectation is caring whether things happen or not; it is taking the things that happen personally. When we lose our expectations what is lost is not so much zest and spice, but rather grasping and neediness. Indeed, as we advance on the spiritual path we find that the things which average people seem to care about ? such as possessions, glory, a pat on the head ? do in fact lose their zest. On the other hand, things like the feel of the wind on your body or the sound of it whispering through the trees becomes exquisitely sensual, piquant, and exciting.
Average people lose expectations only when something they really wanted crashes; and their response to this is depression. People who are depressed do find lie to be a meaningless, empty wasteland with no reward or purpose. When they lose the expectations which prop up their self-esteem and self-worth, they also feel that they have lost their intent. In truth, people who are depressed are very close to enlightenment ? which we can define to be the absence of expectations. However most depressed people are possessed by demons, and the demons block the people?s understanding with self-pity. Magicians differ from average people in that they deliberately try to get rid of expectations, because they know this is the road to freedom. The only way to center oneself in the Now moment instead of yearning for a future which never comes is by ridding oneself of expectations. True self-worth means permitting oneself to be happy Now; of being able to be content with whatever is going on right Now. This is exactly why a magick spell or rituals ? like prayer and creative visualization ? take place in the Now (when casting a magick spell or performing a ritual, you must feel that your desire is true Now, it?s unfolding all around you).
Really, there is no easy way to lose expectations. It?s simply a matter of having your expectations crash and crash and crash, until you just burn out. When that happens, when you finally give up your own will because that?s getting you nowhere fast, then usually you can see a path open in another direction which is free of obstruction. In other words, if you feel blocked, or trapped on a treadmill of frustration, then that is a message that you are on the wrong track. Only when you give up your self-will can you clearly see what the message is all about, and understand why you had been blocked heretofore. And then ? and only then ? will you be able to cast an effective magick spell.
