When starting out in World of Warcraft some of the best ways to make gold is to have a gathering profession; such as Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism. These professions are great for giving you lots of gold without spending too much of your own money.
Mining is a great profession to have because in many of the starting zones there are plenty of copper ore veins to be mined. A stack of 20 copper ore can sell for 10 to 15 gold if you sell it through a trade channel or the auction house. Copper ore is used by blacksmiths, engineers, and jewelcrafters. Since a lot of players are blacksmiths and engineers, the copper ore will sell very fast at the right price.
For those that are starting out, skinning is probably the best profession to have because while you are doing simple quests that require you to kill animals, you can skin them for leather. When you have a good stack of light leather you can sell that stack to players who have leatherworking as their profession. This profession requires a lot of leather and many players are willing to spend top dollar for it. At the auction house, a stack of 20 of light leather can sell for about 5 to 10 gold
Herbalism is a good profession to have when starting out, but is also the most difficult because the herbs you are collecting are only used by the alchemy and inscription professions. The herbs themselves can be difficult to find; Herbs are everywhere, but you have to look hard for them. A stack of 20 peacebloom or silverleaf can typically sell for 5 gold.
Another great way to get gold when you are starting out is selling loot you get from monsters, especially linen and wool cloth. Collect as much as you can get and sell it at the auction house for a couple of pieces of gold. It doesn't cost anything to get and it will sell fast.
These professions can be great moneymakers even if you're not starting out in World of Warcraft, because people are more willing to buy the materials gathered by these professions to use in creating items. The gathering professions are time-consuming and can take you away from questing. You can choose only two professions, and it would be recommended that to those two primary professions are a combination of Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism
