Sylphs are the elemental spirits of air, a name derived from the Greek silphe, meaning a butterfly or moth. Sylphs are mythological creatures in much of Western tradition, especially in the traditions of the mystic branches of the Rosicrucians and Cabalists. Sylphs were popularized by Paracelsus (1493-1541), a Swiss physician and philosopher. Parcelsus is credited with numerous medical texts and books of occult literature.

Sylphs are one of the four types of nature spirits: gnomes (earth element), sylphs (air element), undines (water element) and salamanders (fire element). According to folklore, sylphs create artistic renderings in the sky by transforming clouds into recognizable shapes. Sylphs are also responsible for wind, certain types of storms and weather patterns.

Sylphs have a very broad wingspan and live in the high mountains of the earth. They are regal in manner and bearing, much like eagles. Sylphs are immortal, non-physical beings. In modern times, the term sylph has also come to mean a lithe, graceful woman.

Folklore and religion seem to have a crossover where the line between sylphs and angels becomes blurred. There may also be a connection between young sylphs and small cherubs. Angel devas are in charge of the activities of sylphs. These hierarchs coordinate the activities of sylphs and the result patterns in wind. Sylphs may also serve as messengers for both angels and other elementals.

The hierarchs of the sylphs are know as Aries and Thor. Sylphs are particularly involved in clearing the air of pollution and other chemical hazards. Sylphs play an important role in the maintenance of balance and purity in the air to maintain earth as a physical platform for mankind?s evolution.
