Tattoos and religion does not always go well together. There are specific religions like Orthodox and Judaism that prohibits tattoos. Christianity, on the other hand, is a conservative religion and does not always support something as bold as sporting a tattoo. Also, in today's time, tattoos have gotten a bad reputation has created a certain culture that is not always approving. But as years go by and people tend to be more open to the artistry and craftsmanship of body artwork, more and more people are finding tattoos more acceptable.

Surprisingly, there are a lot of religious characters and images that are transformed into tattoo designs. Jesus Christ crowned with thorns is a very popular tattoo. Other Christian images like the symbolism of the cross, praying hands, the fish, and the bread & body of (chalice and bread) Christ, among others are favorites. Although there other crosses from other religion, the Christian cross is a common pick because of its symbolism of sacrifice and love. Some Christians also sport religious tattoos as sign of their respect their very own religion.

In some culture, like in some countries in South America, religious tattoos are believed to give protection against bad incidents. Some organizations and gangs also acquired religious tattoos as symbolisms of their group.

Bible verses are also popularly used as tattoos. A lot of people would consider bible verses as a reminder of their belief, their philosophy and how they should live their life. At times, bible verses are comes with a religious image, such as Jesus Christ or other Christian images.

You can also find Mother Mary in most tattoo designs. Angels and popular saints are also incorporated in body art. St. Michael the archangel is a common choice because of the details of its design with its wide wings and sword. This image is both fierce and caring.

Aside from Christianity, there are also images from other religion that are used as tattoo designs. In Judaism, for example, you can find the Star of David in body artworks. In Buddhism, the image of Buddha is often used to attract luck. Other elements of the religion that are attractive and simple are often used in tattoo art.

Wicca is another religion that tattoo enthusiasts are fond to derive their images from. The pentacle (five angled star) and the athame are famous symbols of the Wiccans that are used in tattoo art. Earth, wind, fire, and water- four elements that are used in their rituals also contain symbolism popularly used in tattoos.

There are a number of celebrities that sport religious tattoos. Allen Iversion, an NBA player, has praying hands tattooed on his chest and cross daggers on his arm. Pop singer Justin Timberlake has a guardian angel tattooed on his back and a cross on his shoulder. Robbie Williams, the celebrity singer, has both the Celtic cross and Christian cross on him.

Because of the intricacy of details in most tattoo designs, there are often placed in tattoo spots that are wide. These include the entire back area and the upper arm. Because religious images usually have several elements to it, artists would prefer to have a large working space.
