The zodiac has always been a source of fascination for people. It has been thought of as something that is - either directly or indirectly - linked to a person's destiny and characteristic. The 12 signs of the zodiac - Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn - are often used to symbolize an individual's personality. Hence, it is not surprising that some people have taken the zodiac as a motif for tattoo designs. Most people use their own zodiac signs as a tattoo design. Others use the tattoo of loved ones to act as a remembrance for the important people in their lives. For couples, there are those who incorporate two zodiac signs, using it as a symbol of everlasting love planned by destiny.
The word Zodiac mainly comes from the Latin word Zodiacus which means "Circle of Animals". Basically, a specific animal is linked to a person depending on his/her date of birth. This originated from the Greeks who used constellations as a way to determine the zodiac sign. Their method was to look for the most active constellation during a person's birth. The most evident zodiac will now be used to predict the individual's strength, characteristics and weaknesses.
Egypt also had their own version of horoscopes and determining life through the stars. Although not based on the Zodiac, Egyptian horoscopes are also interesting in their own right. The zodiac first came to existence through the work of Abyssinians. Originally they had 18 constellations but were trimmed down to 12 by the Greeks.
The deep history of the zodiac in itself is an excellent reason for using them as a tattoo. The specific zodiac for a person representing his or her birth also adds to the personality and individuality factory most people look for in tattoos. For some, the belief in the stars and their link to our lives is so strong that it is almost tangible.
There are those who opt for the simple zodiac name brandished as a tattoo while some prefer the more colorful pictorial representation of the zodiac. The design may also be placed anywhere on the body, with some going so far as using it as a full sleeve tattoo or a full back design. For those who are leaning towards a zodiac inspired tattoo, you might want to do a little more research about your sign to enhance the creativity of the final design. The zodiac signs have already been examined and expanded, creating a much larger scale of understanding in the symbol. If you want to be more creative, some zodiac signs have sayings and flowers associated with them and you could easily incorporate them with the basic zodiac pattern.
Celebrities have also delved in into zodiac tattoos. One is Joely Fished who sports the tattoo on her ankle. Steffano Gabana has his on his arm while Johnny Miller placed his zodiac tattoo on his hip. Vida Guerra also sports on her wrist.
