What is a Meditation Guide and Do I Really Need One to Learn How to Meditate?

Since meditation is done by sitting quietly and thinking or not thinking, do you need a guide to teach you that? What is the difference between a meditation guide and teacher? How do you learn to meditate?

By: Wil Langford

Since I only teach meditation in Studio City, California, I cannot speak for the rest of the country, however, I can say that here in the Los Angeles area, where I am a meditation guide, there has been a sharp increase in the number of people who are interested in meditation. I think there are several reasons for the increased interest in relaxation and fitness techniques like meditation and yoga. The difficult and stressful financial situation that many people are living through has prompted many people to try to find a way to relax and deal with stress.

Another reason for the new interest in meditation is the study that was done by the National Institute of Health. There study revealed that mind-body techniques like Tai Chi, Yoga, and meditation, had many health benefits. While many religious and spiritual benefits have been attributed to mindfulness techniques and yoga, the study was the first comprehensive compilation of the scientific data that is available to prove the many benefits of mind-body techniques.

Many of the people who contact me are interested in relaxation and that is their primary goal. The reason they want a guide is because an experienced meditation guide can get you to a deep state of relaxation faster than trying to learn the techniques on your own. A meditation guide usually uses guided meditation methods as well as explaining simple breath techniques that also help you to go into deep relaxation.

Depending upon what the meditation group wishes to learn or accomplish, I use a specially tailored meditation to guide them toward their goal through visualization and suggestion, but that doesn't mean that everyone needs a meditation guide. It is possible to learn how to meditate without a guide and that is fine if that is the route you have chosen. I often have students who tell me they have been meditating for a while but have decided they'd like a little help.

No matter where you are on your meditation journey, a good guide will help you in a caring and supportive way, without being intrusive, because, after all, meditation is a very private and personal journey of inner exploration and discovery.
