Famous Psychics - James Van Praagh

James Van Praagh calls himself a ‘survival evidence’ medium. This means that he gives proof of life after death by communicating detailed messages from people who have died. James says he is ‘clairsentient,” meaning that he feels the emotion and personality of the deceased person he makes contact with. He is also clairvoyant and compares his experience to that of the Whoopi Goldberg in the movie, Ghost. Essentially, he receives the feelings behind the words in messages from the deceased. James has felt these feelings for most of his life and says that spirits communicate through emotions because there are no words in any language to describe the sensations that spirits experience.

James became well-known when he appeared on The Other Side, a program on NBC television that explored the paranormal. James, being a favorite guest, became its expert on life after death. His television appearances on Oprah, Larry King Live, 20/20, and 48 Hours made him even more popular. In the past 22 years, he has written best-selling books, created meditation programs and videos, taught classes in mediumship, conducted seminars, and produced several successful television projects, including Ghost Whisperer.

James Van Praagh was born in Bayside, New York. The youngest of four children, he was always fascinated by death. When he was 8 years old, he was praying for God to reveal Himself and saw an open hand appear through the ceiling of his room. Beams of light were coming from the hand, but James had no fear of the vision. He says that the whole thing was very peaceful. At 14, he entered the Catholic seminary, and while there, he discovered a new sense of spirituality, but he knew that there was no training he could receive to prepare him for what became his life-long vocation: communicating with the dead.

James went to San Francisco State University, graduating with a degree in Broadcasting and Communications, and then moved to Los Angeles. At one point, he was invited to a session with a medium, even though he didn’t know what a ‘medium’ was. James was doubtful about the whole thing when the medium told him that he, James, would become a medium within two years. His psychic sensitivity increased, however, and he started to do psychic readings for his friends. At the readings, he began to receive messages from the Other Side. This seemed strange to him at first, but the more he learned about psychic phenomena, he had to admit that he had a gift for reaching the Beyond.

James is recognized as one of the top mediums in the world. He knows that some people are skeptical of his abilities, and James says he is skeptical too. He knows that he is communicating with the dead, but he doesn’t believe that anyone can. According to James, psychics sense energy around objects or living people. Mediums not only sense this energy, but they can serve as an interface between the rapid vibrations of the spirit world and the slower vibrations of the material world.

James does not claim to see into the future, but he can provide details to prove that individuals have survived death. He believes that we are spirit beings and that there is more to us than the time we spend on the physical plane.

James has written a number of books, including Talking to Heaven, Reaching to Heaven, Healing Grief, Heaven and Earth: Making the Psychic Connection, Looking Beyond: A Teen’s Guide to the Spiritual World, Meditations with James Van Praagh. He has also been involved with several successful TV projects, including Beyond with James Van Praagh (2002-2003), Living with the Dead (mini-series 2002), The Dead Will Tell (2004).
