Past Life Regression

This is one of the most controversial subject to be discussed, and there are different experiences of different people who have gone through this practice-some say it works and some say that it does not work and is a sheer hallucination. Alternative healing and occupational therapies contribute their share to the popularity or controversy of this subject, and it remains mostly an individual experience and can't be declared to the masses in open.

Past life regression, also known as PLR, is a process of digging or retrieving the memories of one's own previous lives. The technique sometimes employs hypnosis, but some practitioners use meditation type space. The technique is used for multiple uses in spirituality, like, personal growth, psychological and physical healing, reliving traumas, and treatment of phobias, etc.

Past life regression and reincarnation are closely related and you can deny one while you believe in other. It is believed that the experiences and actions of one's previous life carry over and affect the present life of the person-this is directly linked to the oriental theory of Karma, where they stress that what you do in this birth, will have an reflection in your next birth. This actually helps in controlling and saving the society from dire consequences of bad action and immorality. We can't claim that the memories that people get after going through this practice are true or not, but their effect can either be good or bad, which again depends upon individuality.

How intense is the experience of PLR

The intensity of the experience from time to time-regression can be a very clear and realistic experience, which may involve two or more of the senses, like, vision, hearing, and physical sensations. However, it may be very subtle and vague in its vividness and you may experience images and feelings, which are hard to describe.

The experience sometimes comes in the very first try, and many people do enjoy a vivid experience the first time. The intensity depends upon the knowledge and expertise of the practitioner, and also on the ability of the person to concentrate. Some people get some impressions, some images, thoughts or feelings, in various tries and they sometimes are not able to get a clear picture of the memories.

Setting of a typical PLR session

As anybody can easily guess that PLR corresponds to a very private feeling and, therefore, not many people can be accommodated in the session, lest the person who want to experience PLR will not be able to concentrate or retrieve from the depth of his or her memory. Most of the PLR sessions include just two people-the person who wants to experience, and the instructor or the practitioner.

The session generally begins with some discussion, which is followed by regression-there remains a continuous conversation between the person who is experiencing and the instructor, about the happenings of the things. It allows the instructor to mold or to tailor his or her instruction according to the specific needs of every individual person. It should be noted that these sessions are sometimes highly emotional, and therefore, the instructor himself or herself needs to be a well-trained psychotherapist, who can help maximize the healing potential of these experiences. There are some extra techniques, which follow the regression process, and are oriented to maximize the potential benefits of the memories.

Concluding Words about PLR

Sometimes it sounds too much mystical and people who have lesser belief in metaphysical matters find it difficult to believe that there can be any truth in these practices. But again the point of individuality comes as some people, who find these techniques helpful for various psychological and physical problems, do believe in PLR and other similar practices. This theory finds a firm basis in oriental studies, though the point of retrieving the memories may not be supported with that authenticity; however, reincarnation is well supported in oriental spirituality!
