The Beatles met Transcendental Meditation founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at a lecture in Wales in 1967, and sojourned to India to study with him in 1968. Much has been written in the news and blogosphere about the relationship between Maharishi and the Beatles and the band's "sudden departure" from Maharishi's meditation academy. Most news stories have focused on the supposed "conflict" between the Beatles and Maharishi, and the Beatles' presumed influence of "popularizing" Maharishi's meditation. But rarely has the true story been told of the Beatles' involvement with Maharishi and the influence that Transcendental Meditation had on their lives and music. This account was inspired in part by the New York Times eulogy, "The Man Who Saved the Beatles," written on Maharishi's passing (February 5, 2008). The author's 37-year association with Maharishi-and with several people who were in Rishikesh with Maharishi and the Beatles-sheds light on events that were grossly distorted in the press. As attested by the aforementioned New York Times article and recent stories in the L.A. Times, International Herald Tribune and many other news outlet, it has taken forty years for the news media to get the story straight and honor Maharishi for his knowledge of meditation and enlightenment.
We are living in a dream-deficient society. Ours is a society that talks about dreams only when they are interesting, that is when they are nightmares or movie-ish. Otherwise, we have become content with just waking up for the day, easing back into our routine work life, and not interpreting our dreams and what they are trying to tell us, just letting them accumulate-- a treasure box of letters forever unopened.
