Many decks lend themselves especially well to the practice of meditation. Visual images provide a rich focus for contemplation and gentle examination of undertones, overtones, similarities, contrasts, references. Some, like the microscope photographs of water crystals by Masuro Emoto seem devoid of literary references, others, such as Caroline Myss’s Archetype Cards are rich troves of mythical references, symbolism and depth psychology.

Cards of many kinds have been published under the aegis of New Age andAlternative Medicine. Many of them depend heavily on words, often inspirational, and the graphic element is secondary, illustrative. Many of these decks offeraffirmations. For example, Louise Hay’s Wisdom Cards can be accessed on–line. Very popular among affirmation users are the Angel Cards, developed by Kathy Tyler and Joy Drake. There are also two deck of cards published by [Findhorn Press], the Angels of Light cards authored by Diana Cooper, who also created the Atlantis Oracle Cards, and The Dragon Cards developed by Polly Waterfield.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article OH Cards, under the G. After Richard Nixon journeyed to the People’s Republic of China in 1972, feng shui became marketable in the United States.

It has since been reinvented by New Age entrepreneurs for Western consumption. Feng shui speaks to the profound role of magic, mystery, and order in American life. The following list does not exhaust the modern varieties.

Black Sect—also called BTB Feng Shui—does not match documentary or archaeological evidence, or what is known of the history of Tantra in China. It relies on “transcendental” methods, the concept of clutter as metaphor for life circumstances, and the use of affirmations or ”intentions” to achieve results. The BTB Ba gua was developed by Lin Yun. Each of the eight sectors that were once aligned to compass points now represents a particular area of one’s life.

In contemporary China, practitioners of the divination systems of Qi Men Dun Jia and Da Liu Ren adopt these modes of divination for highly detailed and analytic problem-solving in Feng Shui.

Feng shui today

Today, feng shui is practiced not only by the Chinese, but also by Westerners. However, with the passage of time and feng shui’s popularization in the West, much of the knowledge behind it has been lost in translation, not paid proper attention to, frowned upon

, or scorned.

Robert T. Carroll sums up what feng shui has become in some cases:

“… feng shui has become an aspect of interior decorating in the Western world and alleged masters of feng shui now hire themselves out for hefty sums to tell people such as Donald Trump which way his doors and other things should hang. Feng shui has also become another New Age “energy” scam with arrays of metaphysical products … offered for sale to help you improve your health, maximize your potential, and guarantee fulfillment of some fortune cookie philosophy.” Others have noted how, when feng shui is not applied properly, or rather, without common sense, it can even harm the environment, such as was the case of people planting “lucky bamboo” in ecosystems that could not handle them. Still others are simply skeptical.

Nevertheless, even modern feng shui is not always looked at as a superstitious scam. Many people believe it is important and very helpful in living a prosperous and healthy life either avoiding or blocking negative energies that might otherwise have bad effects. Many of the higher-level forms of feng shui are not so easily practiced without either connections, or a certain amount of wealth because the hiring of an expert, the great altering of architecture or design, and the moving from place to place that is sometimes necessary requires a lot of money. Because of this, some people of the lower classes lose faith in feng shui, saying that it is only a game for the wealthy. Others, however, practice less expensive forms of Feng Shui, including hanging special (but cheap) mirrors, forks, or woks in doorways to deflect negative energy.

Even today feng shui is so important to some people that they use it for healing purposes, separate from western medical practice, in addition to using it to guide their businesses and create a peaceful atmosphere in their homes. In 2005, even Disney acknowledged feng shui as an important part of Chinese culture by shifting the main gate to Hong Kong Disneyland by twelve degrees in their building plans, among many other actions suggested by the master planner of architecture and design at Walt Disney Imagineering, Wing Chao, in an effort to incorporate local culture into the theme park.

The practice of Feng Shui is diverse and multi-faceted. There are many different schools and perspectives. [http://www.ifsguild.org/ The International Feng Shui Guild] (IFSG) is a non-profit professional organization that presents the full diversity of Feng Shui.

At Singapore Polytechnic and other institutions like the [http://www.nycollege.edu/ New York College of Health Professions], many students (including engineers and interior designers) take courses on feng shui every year and go on to become feng shui (or geomancy) consultants.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Feng shui, under the G. />Affirmations are statements that you think or say to yourself or others and they are based on your beliefs. These affirmations can be either positive or negative and have the ability to greatly influence your life and create your reality. In fact, affirmation is something that you are doing all the time. Every thought you think and every word you say is an affirmation. All of your inner dialogues are affirmations. You are continually affirming subconsciously with your words and thoughts and this flow of affirmations is creating your life experience in every moment.

You can achieve the success you desire by programming your mind with positive affirmations. In fact, most of the successful people in the world are not much different from you. The main difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful one is that most successful people have a success mindset. Their inner dialogue is one of success and accomplishment and they always focus on the positive rather than on the negative.

You can use positive affirmations to achieve the success you desire and through the regular use of this powerful technique, you will begin to see wonderful changes in your life you never imagined possible. With positive affirmations, you can conquer your limiting beliefs and negative thoughts and make success a reality for you. Ralph Marston once said, “There is a thought in your mind right now. The longer you hold on to it, the more you dwell upon it, the more life you give to that thought. Give it enough life, and it will become real. So make sure the thought is indeed a great one.”

In order to achieve success, it is very important for you to develop a conscious and focused affirmation process. You must become aware of exactly what you are affirming through your thoughts and consciously and purposefully focus those affirmations on positive and empowering statements. These positive affirmations will reprogram your subconscious mind and allow you to become more and more successful. By developing the habit of using positive affirmations regularly and consistently your subconscious will adapt to the new information it is being provided with. As Claude M. Bristol rightly said “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”

For your affirmations to be effective, it is important that you create your own affirmations based on your specific conditions and circumstances. It is very important to remember that your affirmations are only going to be efficient if you can feel what you are affirming. It is the emotions that your affirmations create that will attract the success that you desire to you. The most effective positive affirmations are phrases that are in alignment with you, empower you and allow you to feel a shift in your emotions as you repeat them.

You can repeat the following affirmations to become more successful or you can create your own affirmations.

1. I am very successful now.

2. Success and achievement are natural outcomes for me.

3. I attract success and prosperity with all of my ideas.

4. Success comes very easily and effortlessly to me.

5. Everything I do turns into success.

6. My success is contagious, other people like it, seek it and respect it.

7. All of my thoughts and ideas lead me straight to success.

8. Prosperity and success is my natural state of mind.

9. I am a success magnet.

10. I am the example of success and triumph.

You can all become as successful as you desire by using positive affirmations regularly and consistently. Remember that success is a state of mind and if you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success. As John Addison rightly said, “You’ve got to win in your mind before you win in your life.”

Priya Deelchand is a Corporate Trainer, Business Coach and Motivational Speaker and Founder of Success Strategies Consultants Ltd. />Positive affirmations — do positive affirmations really work or not?

You may have heard that “affirmations do not work” or perhaps you find yourself wondering whether affirmations really work or how do affirmations work.

The answer of course is “it depends”. It depends on the affirmation and it depends the person’s level of belief … or more accurately your level of disbelief.

If the affirmation you say or write doesn’t feel true or believable to you, more likely than not it will not manifest for you. You have to “feel” good about your affirmations. So use how you feel when writing your affirmation in order to best achieve results.

If you write down an affirmation that really is not what you believe, you’re going to have a natural resistance in your vibration or subconscious thought and so you will be thwarting yourself. So reword your affirmations in a positive way that is believable to you and then say it out loud EVERY DAY, several times a day (because affirmations said only once are not powerful enough to change your sub-conscious patterns of thinking).

For example, instead of saying “I am”, if that feels off, substitute the words “I am in the process of” into your affirmation.

Affirmations help you mold yourself into what you want to become. Keep your affirmations open on the “how”. When you state something freely and openly then there is no resistance as to how it can come to you. When we say “mold”, we mean you are in effect changing yourself, so you need to establish this new you slowly and gently over time.

Also, be careful in your wording of your affirmation because if you aren’t, you may go through some chaos as you achieve it. For example,if you want a new job because your current one is stressful, you may get the new job by being fired from your current one or even find yourself an even more stressful job.

In order to avoid chaos or the drama, work into your affirmation that you are achieving what you want in an easy, gentle way. So word your affirmation indicating you are finding a job that you will enjoy in a way that provide you positive change.

“I am in the process of finding a job that is fun and fulfilling and I am making the transition to that job in a relaxed, stress free manner.”

Repeat this once a day every day if you have no resistance to saying it.

Remember also that if your job doesn’t show up right away, that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming. Things have to line up first, which means you really have to truly know what it is you want … otherwise you will not likely be in alignment with it.

So while you are waiting for the “perfect job”, affirm to yourself that your current job is stress free and enjoyable. Now you are covered. You get less stress in your current job, while your perfect job is on the way.

Now you are out of the way in terms of how it happens. You may find that in the end you didn’t need a new job, but just had to adjust to the changes in your current one. And once you learned to respond better to your circumstances things improved for you in all areas of your life.

We also hear about people using over 300 affirmations a day, and getting no results. The solution is to focus. Focus on something that is really important for you. In this case, less is more.

Finding relief from your current situation also may be the next step for you to achieving success. So start with an affirmation that you are discovering more joy or love in your life. Start with simple things.

If you find yourself in a stressful situation, you can repeat specific affirmations to help calm you down. Let’s say you are stressed, then affirm you have “peace and calmness” soaking deep into your being right now. Take a few minutes to see yourself soaking in that wonderful energy. Those quick positive affirmations are handy, so be ready to use them.

It can be very simple to work with positive affirmations if you take a simple easy does it approach with no resistance in the words. A lot can be done right now to make your next 12 months a positive experience just by starting today to write out your key affirmations for the next 12 months.

If you’d like more information about how to use positive affirmations, visit Intrinsic Coach® Warren Wojnowski’s website and be sure to sign up for his free 7 day eCourse by clicking here now: Create Abundance, or send an email now to inspabundance@aweber.com

No related posts.

Using Positive Affirmations as an Aid to Self Improvement

Positive Affirmations

Affirmations

Daily Affirmations

Mantra

Positive Thinking

Think positively
<guid

By: Roy Thomsitt
One of the terms you may have come across in your reading or listening about positive thinking is “positive affirmations”; but what is a positive affirmation?

An affirmation, according to a dictionary definition, is a statement asserting the existence or the truth of something. In self improvement, affirmations can be used in silent, verbal, or written communication with yourself. This is normally done in the form of a positive affirmation, a communication to your subconscious that a certain truth already exists; a truth that relates to you personally, and whose realization is beneficial to your personal well being.

You could say that the use of positive affirmations is a form of autosuggestion, or even self hypnosis. However, if you want to make practical use of affirmations in improving any aspect of your life, then none of that really matters. The fact is that using positive affirmations is simple to do, and the technique can be applied in different ways and at different times to suit your life style. While it helps to have some understanding of the mental processes that might take place, and of expert interpretations of what affirmations actually are in the spectrum of self development, it is not essential.

What Aspects of Self Improvement Can Positive Affirmations Be Applied To?

The answer to the question raised in the heading could be answered in one word: “any”. Positive affirmations can be applied to any aspect of your personal life you wish to improve, so if you are considering self improvement in any form, whether to career success, business success, improved health, or the removal of bad habits, then positive affirmations should be considered part of your armoury.

When Should You Use Positive Affirmations?

With positive affirmations, you are making positive statements to your subconscious, with the expectation that your subconscious mind will absorb those affirmations and treat them as reality. Repeated often and firmly enough, those statements should become the reality of your conscious mind and the physical work around you.

As with any form of communicating with your inner self, such as with meditation, the ideal time to make use of positive affirmations is when you can set aside a period and a place where you can get peace and quiet, sufficient to relax totally without interruption. Those who are already experienced in meditation will find it easy to achieve the ideal conditions for using positive affirmations. In fact, integrating your affirmations into your meditation sessions is a practical option worth considering, especially if you are pressed for time.

However, as with meditation, the ideal is not always easy to fit into your busy life, so you may need to compromise. Here are some suggestions on how to build in positive affirmations into your:

1. I find positive affirmations effective at night time, just before sleep. Once you have mastered the skill of not falling asleep too quickly, when you have gone to bed for the night is a good time to fit in some positive affirmations. As you relax and unwind, start mentally going through the positive affirmations you want to feed to your subconscious mind.

If you sleep alone, or have an understanding partner, then you can say the affirmations out loud also. If not, instead of just thinking of each affirmation as you say it, hear yourself saying it so you get the benefit of the sound without having to make any noise to disturb your partner.

You can repeat your affirmations any time you want. It is a mental process, so as long as you are conscious, it can be done. Any spare minute alone can be utilized for positive affirmations, or you can even repeat them mentally when you are in the company of others, such as on the bus or train to work. What is important is that you repeat the affirmations regularly.

Other Tips For Self Improvement Through Positive Affirmations

You can increase the likelihood of positive affirmations working for you by adopting some or all of the following tips:

1. At the same time as you are repeating your affirmations, incorporate visualisation to accompany each affirmation. For example, if your affirmation is “I am a successful manager with my current employer”, then visualize yourself actually performing that role in your work environment.

2. Write down your affirmations, and leave them in places where they act as a reminder, such as pinning them up by the mirror in the bathroom, or on a Post-It on your work desk.

3. Repeat your positive affirmations daily.

4. Make the affirmations as detailed as possible, so that your subconscious is left in no doubt what you mean. For your example, if your affirmation is “I am living in a new house” it is very vague. A new house could be in an undesirable neighbourhood in a part of the country, or world, you would no want to live. Be more precise, and add details of the type of house, key features, and location.

5. Make use of the present tense, as the example I give in 4. above. “I am” is far more convincing that “I will be”, “I will” or “I might”.

Those are just five additional suggestions to help you get the most out of using positive affirmations as a route to self improvement. There are many more tips that may help you, but in time and with practice, you will find what suits you best, and come up with your own “tips”.

This positive affirmations article was written by Roy Thomsitt, owner and part author of the Routes To Self Improvement website.

NU U, an exciting devlopment in ezines.

Affirmation is a statement of an idea you desire to “make firm”, to impress upon your subconscious mind, so that eventually it begins to work for you automatically.

There are many different ways to practice self-hypnosis, and writing affirmations is one of them. As you keep on working with self-hypnosis, you may find that at different times your mood and preferences may change and different methods may be more suitable for you. The more options you are aware of, the better you will be able to deal successfully with any situation regardless of the circumstances.

There may be times when you just want to relax and listen to a hypnosis recording and let it guide you toward your desired outcome. There may be times when you feel too busy and may find it more suitable to just let the subliminal recording play in the background. And then, there may be times when you feel too restless, or you are experiencing some pressing feelings you’d like to get out of your system and transform them, times when you just don’t feel like relaxing, but would rather engage in some form of physical action. Writing affirmations is one of the things you can do at such times. By the way, you can write them or type them, repeat them silently or aloud, or even sing them, according to your preference.

Another purpose of writing affirmations is that they allow you to become aware of any conflicting beliefs hiding in your subconscious mind, so that you can transform them at the same time.

An effective process of working with affirmations

has three main stages- just like a good hypnosis session, a prayer, or any other form of change-work. The following process describes an effective way you can work with affirmations.

STAGE 1

The first stage gets you into the appropriate state of mind for impressing the affirmation upon your subconscious. In a regular hypnosis session, you get into this state of mind generally through relaxing your mind and body. When working with affirmations, you may want to align yourself with the source of all power, or if you prefer, your own inner power to create changes in your life, by writing appropriate affirmations.

The purpose of this stage in hypnosis is to help you to put aside the critical faculty of your conscious mind. The purpose of this stage when writing affirmations is to help you put your “outer” self aside, so that you can access your inner “creative power”, your “true Self” which knows of no limitations and has all the knowledge and power to bring about the desired changes in your life.

Here are few samples of such affirmations:

“I live and move and have my being in an ocean of love, power and wisdom of God”.

“I am in, one with, and completely amalgamated with all love, power and wisdom of God”.

“I allow all the love, power and wisdom of God to express fully and freely through me now.”

Depending on the goal you are working with, you may replace the word(s) “love, power and wisdom”, with “God”, “Spirit”, “abundance”, “peace”, “energy”, “healing energy”, “light”, “life”, “chi”, “ki” or any other attribute or the “universal essence”.

How long should you keep on writing these affirmations in one sitting? Until you get the corresponding FEELING. You impress your subconscious mind through FEELINGS, so you need to keep on writing until you can FEEL that the affirmation you are writing is true for you.

If listening to a particular music helps you to create the desired feeling, by all means have that music playing in the background. You may also listen to corresponding subliminal or supraliminal recordings while writing your affirmations.

STAGE 2

The second stage of writing affirmations consists of your “goal-specific” affirmations. Your goal should be stated in positive terms (what you want to experience instead of what you don’t want), and be in a present tense – “as if” the desired outcome is your reality now.

Your affirmations should begin with “I am” or “I am becoming”, “I have”, etc.

Your affirmations should also be specific. For example, if you affirmed “I now have more money” – you may find one cent somewhere and the affirmation would be fulfilled, but that’s probably not what you had in mind. Your subconscious mind takes your statements literally and it fulfills them according to what you affirm. A better affirmation would be “I now have $ (specific amount)”, or “I am now earning $ (specific amount) a month”.

You may write these affirmations in the first (“I am”), second (“You are”) and third person (“[your name] is”).

Your affirmations will be even more effective if you incorporate “feeling” words into your affirmations. For example
“I feel so good that I am now able to …”

“I feel so exited now that I have …”

“I have decided to …”

“I am committed to …”

Certain types of general affirmations do work well, too.

For example

“All my needs are now and forever supplied”, or

“I am enjoying perfect health now and forever”.

These general types of affirmations are pretty close to the affirmations you were writing in the first stage of the affirmation process because what you’re doing here is affirming and aligning yourself with spiritual truths. You are simply affirming that you desire to experience in your physical world what is already true for you in spirit. You are acknowledging these spiritual truths and allowing them to express in your life.

The universe (or, your subconscious / Superconscious mind – whatever term you prefer) follows the path of least resistance. This means that what you ask for will come in a way that is the easiest to get according to your beliefs, desires and expectations and according to beliefs, desires and expectations of everyone else who may be involved in your project.

If you leave the “how”, what you desire will come about often much faster than if you insist that it has to come in any specific way. You can simply state:

“[your desired goal] now manifests for me in a perfect way for the highest good of all”.

There may be many more ways of getting what we desire than the ways we are consciously aware of, so leaving this element to the universal creative intelligence (or to your “inner wisdom”) would often help you to get something that is even better than what you have originally envisioned.

It is also good to distinguish between the “form” and the “essence”. The “essence” relates to the feeling you’re after, the feeling you believe the specific thing would give you. The “form” is the thing you believe will best fulfill this need and enable you to experience the desired feeling. Often times we may get exactly the thing we asked for only to find out that it didn’t really give us the feeling we desired to experience. Also, focusing on the “essence” or the “feeling” will help to manifest the truly desired experience in your life much faster and to your greater satisfaction.

To find out what is the “essence” of what you desire, you may simply ask yourself a question “What will having this thing enable me to experience?” For example if you are in debt, you ultimate desire to have all of your needs met and all debts paid off. Even if it is a financial debt, you may or may not need money to pay it off. There are many different ways in which your debt may be cleared – it may happen that you encounter new opportunities to create that money and pay the debt, it may happen that money from an unexpected source lands in your lap, it may happen that the debt simply becomes erased as if it never existed, or some other serendipitous circumstances occur. For this reason, it is always in your best interest to remain open and expect even miraculous solutions, while at the same time you commit yourself to do your very best to help yourself.

The affirmations you write will work in conjunction with the beliefs which are already impressed upon your subconscious mind. So, if you are writing affirmations for prosperity, what may initially happen is that you end up with more offers for the same type of work you’re accustomed to getting.

This simply means that, through repeated action, this method of acquiring money has become conditioned in your subconscious mind. And, of course, you can change it by reaffirming the method in which you’d rather be acquiring money now, until this new idea becomes impressed upon your subconscious mind.

Or, if you have a health challenge, and begin to affirm for perfect health, the first method you may come across may again be the one that is most acceptable to you according to beliefs and conditioning already impressed in your subconscious mind.

Whatever first comes your way as a response to your affirmation doesn’t mean that it’s the only way – it just means that it’s most appropriate based on your current beliefs. By sticking with the idea you really had in mind, sooner or later you’ll get your desired outcome.

You may also get the actual thing you are after or you may end up with a lot of opportunities requiring some kind of action on your part and leading to the acquisition of the desired thing. It is important to recognize when what you asked for is manifesting in some way in your life, even if it’s not exactly what you asked for. This will still boost your confidence and condition your subconscious mind for success because you’ll know that something is working even if you need to adjust your request in some way.

While I did say that you should be “specific” there are some things that you should avoid regardless of how initially attractive such ideas may seem to be. Things to avoid are asking for a job that a specific person has, a possession belonging to a specific person, or that a specific person (e.g. Joe or Mary) goes out with you on a date, or worse, drops dead. Can you get those things with affirmations? Yes, you can – but ultimately you may not like the consequences. These things would be “ill-gotten” and sooner or later, something would be taken away from you “in exchange”, something that you consider valuable.

You can, on the other hand, affirm for yourself that you are irresistibly attractive and that you ideal partner is now coming into your life. You can also list down the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual qualities of such a person as well as any other general interests. You can specify what kind of relationship you’d like to attract and enjoy. You can specify that you’d like to work in a specific occupation, make certain amount of money, etc. And you can affirm peace, love, happiness and abundance for other people. In short, if you wouldn’t want other people affirming something for you, don’t affirm such things for others.

When you affirm for something, it is pretty much like throwing a pebble (your statement) into an ocean (of infinite supply). It will create waves in all directions, gather all different expressions of the energy (thoughts and feelings) you just sent out, it will multiply and come back to you. So, unless you’d really like to experience what you asked for multiplied and returned to you, don’t affirm it.

If you desire something, but don’t have a clue how to create such experience in your life, or it appears that all doors are closed to you, you can affirm:

“The way now opens for me to … (state your desire)”

The way to uncover any conflicting beliefs you may have regarding what you desire to create in your life is to write your affirmation once, then take a deep breath, and write down whatever first comes to your mind as a response to such statement. Then write your affirmation again, take another deep breath and write down whatever comes to your mind as a response. For example:

(affirmation) “I, (your name), completely forgive myself”

(response) “I smashed my dad’s car. I was so irresponsible.”

(affirmation) “I, (your name), completely forgive myself”

(response) “I never once called my mother in two years. What kind of a person am I?”.

(affirmation) “I, (your name), completely forgive myself”

(response) “I yelled at my son. Oh boy, I’m so stressed out” … etc.

Incidentally, if you choose to work with forgiveness affirmations, it is recommended that you write them 70 times a day for seven days. You are bound to experience some major transformation and emotional clearing in just one week. You may be very surprised with the results.

And talking of “clearing”, if you find yourself standing in front of apparently insurmountable obstacles, you may write the following affirmations:

“The path to my (being, having, doing) …is now clear.”

“All obstacles to my (being, having, doing) … vanish into nothingness”.

“I now give all of my problems to the Spirit (Christ, Inner Wisdom, God) within me.”

“All obstacles to my (being, having, doing) … now dissolve in the Light.”

“I totally surrender to my Inner Wisdom”.

“Beloved God, Thy Will be done in me and through me now and forever.”

STAGE 3

The third stage of the affirmation process consists of closing the process. In hypnosis, this is usually done through suggestions for emerging from the state of hypnosis to normal waking consciousness.

While writing affirmations, you can write down “gratitude” affirmations acknowledging the acceptance of the blessings (change) you have just asked for.

Some examples of these affirmations are:

“I am deeply grateful for my life”.

“I am deeply grateful that I now enjoy perfect health.”

“I am deeply grateful that the million dollars are now manifesting in my hands.”

“I am deeply grateful for the ability to serve others.”

“I am deeply grateful for my ability to …”

And, of course, you may close the whole process with “It is so!”, or “So be it!”, or “Amen!” knowing that what you asked for will most definitely manifest in your life according to your beliefs and expectations.

Dr. Laura De Giorgio is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner.

Affirmations can play a key role in helping you to leverage daily the Law of Attraction (LOA) for your training for a marathon, half marathon, or other endurance race.

What is an affirmation?

The Law of Attraction essentially says, “We become what we think about.” And we attract more of the feelings and beliefs that we regularly affirm. This is the power behind affirmations.

Why should I use affirmations for endurance running or walking?

You should write and repeatedly read affirmations as an endurance runner or walker because they can focus the Law of Attraction on behaviors and beliefs that will support your racing goals.

Who is the subject of an affirmation?

You should be the subject of each of your affirmations, with the affirmation written in first-person, singular form (as in “I am…”). The reason that having you as the subject of the affirmation is ideal is that your unconscious mind has direct control over you but does not have direct control over anyone else.

How should I write each affirmation statement?

As a positive, not negative, statement: Your unconscious mind will ignore any “no” or “not” in a statement. For example, your unconscious mind will convert “I do not slow down as I approach the finish line.” to “I do slow down as I approach the finish line.”; so “I maintain my pace or speed up as I approach th

e finish line.” is the preferable way to write this affirmation. Another reason to write affirmations in the positive is that they feel better to say to yourself. And that single, good feeling that you attach to the statement as you say it gives it a stronger impact on your unconscious mind than would a mixed-emotions, negative statement. A third reason to write affirmations in the positive is a practical one: Positive statements tend to be shorter than negative statements. So you can write them more easily and read them more easily.

About the present, not the future: Your unconscious mind treats each statement about the present as something over which it has full control. In contrast, it treats each statement about the future as something over which it has no control. In other words, your unconscious mind operates in the present.

As if it were true, even if it is false today: Every time that you read an affirmation to yourself, you are incrementally strengthening in your unconscious mind the belief expressed by that affirmation. Given that your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between fact and fiction, you can read to yourself an affirmation that is not true today with the assurance that eventually your unconscious mind will align your life with that affirmation such that eventually the affirmation is true. In other words, an affirmation need not be true when written or read, but repeated reading of the affirmation increases the likelihood that eventually it will be true.

With specificity: Specific statements have a stronger impact than vague, general statements have on your unconscious mind. For example, “I am a five-hour marathoner.” is more valuable than “I am a fast marathoner.” as an affirmation.

How many affirmations should I have?

The number of affirmations that you have related to your endurance running or walking depends totally on you. Some people prefer to have just a few affirmations. Other people like to have lots of affirmations, including many that are re-worded versions of other affirmations.

Where should I be when I am composing my affirmations?

You should compose your affirmations at a computer in a quiet, private location. You may want to play some inspiring or gentle music while writing them. A few minutes of meditation before beginning could help your writing, too.

Ideally, each affirmation should feel as if it were an expression of your best self — as if your “higher self” were telling you what it believes you are capable of being, doing, or experiencing.

If you are stumped when you initially sit down to type affirmations into your computer, then give yourself a goal to carry around a pen and small notebook so that you record several affirmation ideas as you go about your daily life. You eventually should have enough ideas in your notebook to produce several affirmations when you return to your computer.

What are some examples of affirmations for endurance runners or walkers?

Here are examples of affirmations that are correctly worded for an endurance runner or walker:

“I always breathe aerobically when I run.”

“I shave at least one minute off my personal record in every marathon that I run.”

“I eat exactly what I need for each walk.”

“I give myself permission to run my own race.”

“I stop for water precisely when necessary at water stops while walking my half marathon.”

Why should I record my affirmations to a computer?

Typing your affirmations into a computer document gives you three benefits over handwriting them:

Typing them on a computer lets you craft them easily. The ease of editing text with a computer ensures that you can craft affirmations that are “just right” for you to repeat many times to yourself over the coming days, weeks, and months.

Typing them on a computer lets you update them easily. Having your affirmations in a computer document means that you can refine them easily to suit you better as your needs or goals change but without having to re-write your entire list of affirmations.

Typing them on a computer lets you print them in different sizes. This gives you the flexibility to make a single-page list for scheduled reviews, larger printouts of affirmations for in-your-face display in your bedroom, bathroom, or office, and a wallet-size, laminated list for on-the-go review whenever you have downtime.

How should I read my affirmations?

Always read them as if you believe them, even if they are not yet(!) true.

Always read them with an emotional intensity that will capture the attention and imagination of your unconscious mind.

Read them aloud if at all possible.

Even if you are only reading them silently in your mind, vary from session to session your pace (from a fast-talker to a slow-talker), your pitch or accent (your own voice, the voice of a favorite actor, etc.), and your volume (from a whisper to a gentle shout) — to avoid boredom and to stimulate your unconscious mind in multiple ways with the same affirmations.

When and how often should I read my affirmations?

Plan to read your affirmations several times a day but at least twice a day:

As part of a morning ritual in which you use several LOA methods to prepare you for the day ahead;

Later in the day — and perhaps as you retire to bed — to reinforce them.

If you work at home, reading your affirmations aloud during your workday may be no problem. If you work in an office, in a retail store, in a warehouse, in a factory, or otherwise with other people in your workplace, then consider using your automobile or a secluded outdoor area as your “sound booth” in which you read your affirmations aloud.

What else can I do with my affirmations besides reading them to myself?

Post individual affirmations throughout your home, in your car, or in your office so that you see and unconsciously absorb them even though you do not consciously and deliberately read them.

Record yourself saying your affirmations, mix that voice recording with different background, instrumental songs that are suitable for the targeted periods for playback (such as for running, for stretching, or for winding down at the end of the day), and play the appropriate mixed recordings at least twice a day — such as while training for an endurance race, while driving, while in the shower, or while completing indoor or outdoor chores.

Kirk Mahoney, Ph.D., loves to walk and run, and his SpryFeet.com website provides practical research for runners and walkers.
