OCCAM was founded in 1998 and is responsible for NCI’s research agenda in complementary and alternative medicine, as it relates to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and symptom management. The OCCAM differs from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in that it is exclusively focused on cancer, while the NCCAM funds a much broader program of NIH research into CAM treatments for all diseases and disorders.

As part of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, OCCAM tries to identify gaps in CAM cancer research and funds scientists interested in researching this subject. The stated mission of OCCAM is to improve the quality of care of cancer patients, as well as those at risk for cancer and those recovering from cancer treatment. It aims to achieve this by helping advance evidence-based medicine in CAM practice and high-quality CAM research. OCCAM also tries to supply reliable information about the possible risks and benefits of alternative medicine to the health care community, scientists, and general public.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine, under the G.

Definitions of wellness vary depending upon who is promoting it. These wellness promoters try to facilitate a healthier population and a higher quality of life. Wellness can be defined as the pursuit of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Wellness, as an alternative concept, is generally thought to mean more than the mere absence of disease; rather it is an optimal state of health. Wellness is pursued by people interested in recovering from ill health or specific health conditions or by those interested in optimizing their already good state of health.

Supporters of these programs believe that many factors contribute to wellness: living in a clean environment, eating organic food, regularly engaging in physical exercise, balance in career; family; and relationships, and developing religious faith. But, there are two basic widely different approaches to wellness. The original faith-based wellness programs offer a spiritual approach that is in opposition to more recent secular wellness promoters.[http://www.seekwellness.com/wellness/reports/2004-02-10.htm]

Some well known wellness promoters are Deepak Chopra, Michael Roizen, Mehmet Oz, Don B. Ardell, John Travis, David F. Duncan, and Andrew Weil.

Secular-based programs

The aging population participates in wellness programs in order to feel better and have more energy. Wellness programs allow individuals to take increased responsibility for their health behaviors. People often enroll in a private wellness program to improve fitness, stop smoking, or to learn how to manage their weight.

Workplace wellness programs

are recognized by more and more companies for their value in improving health and well-being of their employees. They are part of a company’s health and safety program. These wellness programs are designed to improve employee morale, loyalty, and productivity. They could consist of as little as a gym full of exercise equipment that is available to their employees on company property during the workday. But they may also cover smoking cessation programs, nutrition; weight; or stress management training, health risk assessments, and health screenings.

Faith-based programs

Religious organizations often provide an array of services to residents in need, such as food, shelter, clothing, childcare and senior services in the community. Faith-based wellness ministries are simply wellness programs sponsored by the faith-based community, which are similar to those offered by others, but generally also focus on the spiritual, New Age and religious aspects of wellness from the perspective of a particular faith. Here, wellness is viewed as a quest for spiritual wholeness. Robert H. Schuller’s be happy Beatitudes, for example, expounds upon the New Testament and presents eight positive principles for fulfillment.

New Age guru Deepak Chopra, author of more than 40 books on spirituality and health, offers an alternative and New Age spirituality perspective to wellness.

Please note that there are many charitable services provided by religious organizations that do NOT qualify as faith-based, because they make no religious requirements of the recipients. For example, Roman Catholic food kitchens typically are open to all regardless of creed. This is in contrast to the drug addiction programs of the Nation of Islam, as described in the Autobiography of Malcolm X, where the addict is exhorted to appeal to Allah for help. Alcoholics Anonymous has the form of a faith based program but many of its chapters leave the interpretation of ‘higher power’ to the individual.

Faith-based wellness also includes specific diets, such as Dr. George Malkmus’ Bible-based Hallelujah Diet and others.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Wellness (alternative medicine), under the G. Its goal is to integrate a traditional hospital with alternative medicine. The West Virginia location accepts seasonal volunteers through the website. The new hospital has not been built as Adams continues to seek funding. The current caretaker staff at the West Virginia site consists of one person, but claims to be actively developing educational programs in sustainable systems design targeted to medical students, university alternative break groups, and the general public. Several videos and books have also been produced including the 1998 film, ”Patch Adams”.

Since the 1990s Adams has supported the Ithaca Health Alliance (IHA), founded as the Ithaca Health Fund (IHF) by Paul Glover. In January 2006 IHA launched the

Ithaca Free Clinic, bringing to life key aspects of Adams’ vision. Adams has also given strong praise to [http://www.healthdemocracy.org/book.html ''Health Democracy''], Glover’s book written and published the same year.

In October 2007, Adams and the Gesundheit Board unveiled its campaign to raise $1 million towards building a Teaching Center and Clinic on its land in West Virginia. Adams’ girlfriend, Susan Parenti is the impetus behind this project. The Center and Clinic will enable Gesundheit to see patients and teach health care design.

Adams urges medical students to develop compassionate connections with their patients. Ultimately, Adams wants the Gesundheit! Institute to open a 40-bed hospital in rural West Virginia that offers free, holistic care to anyone who wants it.

Adams was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award on January 29, 1997.

In 2008, Adams agreed to become honorary chair of the “International Association for the Advancement of Creative Maladjustment” or IAACM. In a number of his speeches and essays, Martin Luther King, Jr. had called for such an IAACM, but none was ever created. While at NIMH, he developed the first national program for runaway and homeless youth, edited the first comprehensive studies of alternative and holistic medicine, directed the Special Study on Alternative Services for President Carter’s Commission on Mental Health, and created a nationwide preceptorship program for medical students. As Georgetown Medical School’s Director of the Program of Mind-Body Studies and Clinical Professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine since 1980, he has helped design and implement a study track for medical students in integrative and alternative medicine, which covers nutrition, self-regulation and relaxation techniques like meditation, and the social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of psychiatry.

Gordon founded the nonprofit Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) in 1991. Designing and offering professional training programs in mind-body medicine, integrative oncology, and nutrition to health and mental health professionals is meant to help them integrate these techniques into their practice and extend help to as many people as possible. Through CMBM Gordon has also applied mind-body skills to global trauma relief in war-torn and disaster-stricken regions such as Bosnia, Kosovo, Israel, and Gaza as well as in post-9/11 New York and post-Katrina southern Louisiana. Gordon and his colleagues have trained over 3,000 health and mental h<div

He and his CMBM colleagues have also supervised and trained local leadership teams in Kosovo, Israel, and Gaza to make the CMBM model a fully integrated and sustainable part of the local healthcare system.

In 2008, CMBM won a research award from the US Department of Defense to study this mind-body approach with veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Gordon was also appointed to chair the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy (WHCCAMP) from 2000-2002 by President Clinton.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article James Samuel Gordon, under the G. Most doctors contend that the ‘toxins’ in question do not even exist. In response, alternative medicine proponents frequently cite heavy metals or pesticides as the source of toxification; however, no evidence exists that detoxification approaches have a measurable effect on these or any other chemical levels. Medical experts state that body cleansing is unnecessary as the human body is naturally capable of maintaining itself, with several organs dedicated to cleansing the blood and gut. Professor Alan Boobis OBE, Toxicologist, Division of Medicine, Imperial College London states that “The body’s own detoxification systems are remarkably sophisticated and versatile. They have to be, as the natural environment that we evolved in is hostile. It is remarkable that people are prepared to risk seriously disrupting these systems with unproven ‘detox’ diets, which could well do more harm than good.”

The apparently satisfied testimonial and anecdotal accounts by customers can be explained by either disguised employees creating false anecdotes, or actual customers who are experiencing the placebo effect after trying the products, natural recovery from an actual illness that would have occurred without the use of the product, psychological improvements on illnesses that are psychosomatic or the result of neurosis, and the fact that a large number of dissatisifed customers have not posted equally applicale anecdoctes about their po<div
