It may have been used as a sacrament in ancient Egypt and certain ancient South American cultures. Eating Blue Lotus can act as a mild sedative. ”Nymphaea caerulea” is distantly related to, and possesses similar activity to ”Nelumbo nucifera”, the Sacred Lotus. Both Nymphaea caerulea and Nelumbo nucifera contain the alkaloids nuciferine and aporphine.

The mildly sedating effects of ”Nymphaea caerulea” makes it a likely candidate (among several) for the lotus plant eaten by the mythical Lotophagi in Homer’s Odyssey.

Used in aromatherapy, ”Nymphaea caerulea” is purported to have a “divine” essence, bringing heightened awareness and tranquility.

Some sources cite it as an antispasmodic similar to copal resin.

In modern culture, blue lotus flowers are used to make various concoctions including blue lotus tea, wine and martinis. Recipes for such drinks involve steeping or soaking the petals for up to 3 weeks. Blue lotus tea is prepared by boiling the entire flowers for 10–20 minutes.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Nymphaea caerulea, under the G. N. U. Free Documentation License. With a good understanding of the solvent they are using, extractors can produce absolutes with aromas closer to the original plant product than is possible with essential oils produced through distillation. Examples of this are rose otto (steam distilled rose oil), as opposed to rose absolute, and neroli (steam distilled oil from the blossom of the bitter orange tree), as opposed to orange blossom absolute. Also, some botanicals are too delicate to be steam distilled and can only yield their aroma through other methods, such as solvent extraction or lipid absorption. Examples of these are jasmine, tuberose, and mimosa.

This production method leaves trace amounts of solvents in the absolutes. Therefore, absolutes are considered undesirable for aromatherapy . However, absolutes are used extensively in perfumery because the aromatic compounds in absolutes have not undergone processes involving high temperatures. This makes them often smell fresher. Although the solvent traces could produce off-notes in the final product, this is usually not a problem if the absolute is of a decent quality.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Absolute (fragrance), under the G. He came up with the name “as a joke” and made all his fellow students Fellows of the Association of Osteomyologists. This was a response to news that the UK government was about to bring in new legislation requiring all chiropractors and osteopaths to be registered with new governing bodies. The new acts were not universally welcomed by the grassroots of the professions. The acts did not forbid the various practices of chiropractic and osteopathy, but protected the titles of osteopath and chiropractor to those registered with the new organisations. By taking on the title ”Osteomyologist”, practitioners can advertise their various spinal manipulation without being in breach of the legislation. It has been estimated that 4 to 5% of osteopaths were denied registration as osteopaths because they were not up to date with training or would not conform to current accepted safe practice. Many of those continued practicing as osteomyologists.

Clemens created the name from the joining of ”Osteo” = bone, ”Myo” = muscle and ”ology”, a study.

Osteomyologists have no defining philosophy other than being allowed to practice their own versions of manual therapy without restriction by a statutory regulatory authority. Practitioners are encouraged to blend other forms of alternative medicine into their work such as aromatherapy, reflexology and Bach flower remedies. Practitioners may bring beliefs about healing from other pra<div

Members of the Association designate themselves with the letters MAO (Member of the Association of Osteomyologists) after their name. Members are expected to partake in continuing training programmes and can present evidence of ongoing training in any alternative medicine. No code of conduct is made public and there is no published method by which members of the public can make concerns known about members. The organisation does not publish membership figures, but their site would suggest that there are several hundred members.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Osteomyology, under the G. N. U. The Prison Service claimed at the time that Peterborough as a ‘mixed-use’ prison would become a blueprint for the prisons of the future. Peterborough Prison was soon involved in controversy however, when the jail advertised to recruit 2 holistic therapists to offer reflexology, aromatherapy and Indian head massages to inmates. The MP for Peterborough, Stewart Jackson accused the prison of pampering inmates and sending out the wrong message to hard-working families.

In January 2008, a national table of prisons compiled by the Prison Service revealed that Peterborough Prison had come last out of 132 prisons and prison clusters, with low marks for reducing re-offending, organisational effectiveness and decency. A month later, women prisoners at Peterborough complained that the food served at the jail was too high in calories, and made them put on weight. Officials at the prison claimed that healthy options were always available for inmates at mealtimes.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Peterborough (HM Prison), under the G. N. U. The vegetable matter or essential oil is heated by a variable temperature, pressurized hot air convection stream, and the resultant vapors are collected in the heatproof bag. Once the bag has inflated, the user removes it from the heater base and inhales or otherwise disperses the vapors using a set of valves.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Volcano Vaporizer, under the G.
