St. Teresa’s mystical experiences have inspired several authors in modern times, but not necessarily from Teresa’s Christian theological perspective.

The 2006 book ”Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert recognizes St Teresa as “that most mystical of Catholic figures” and alludes to St. Teresa’s ”Interior Castle” as the “mansions of her being” and her journey as one of “divine meditative bliss.” Gilbert, was raised a protestant Christian but her book describes her path to God through yoga.

The 2007 book by American spiritual author Caroline Myss, ”Entering the Castle”, was inspired by St. Teresa’s ”Interior Castle” but still has a New Age approach to mysticism .

St. Teresa also inspired American author R. A. Lafferty in his novel, ”Fourth Mansions” (1969), which was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1970.

The seven deadly sins have long been a source of inspiration for writers and artists, from morality tales of the Middle Ages to modern manga series and video games.

Menninger on the Deadly Sins

In his 1973 book, ”Whatever Became of Sin?”, Karl Menninger argued that the traditional list of the seven deadly sins was incomplete; that most modern ethicists would include cruelty and dishonesty and probably would rate these as more serious than some of the more traditional sins such as gluttony or sadness.

Culbertson on the Deadly Sins

In his 1908 book, “How one is not to be,” Andrew Culbertson argues that two further vices should be added to the deadly sins: fear and superstition. Fear, in Culbertson’s description, amounts to the modern psychiatric condition, Delusional disorder while superstition is, “Belief in things that one does not understand, to the point of giving money to frauds and spiritual confidence men.”

Enneagram Integration

The Enneagram of Personality integrates the seven with two additional “sins”, ”deceit” and ”fear”. The Enneagram descriptions are broader than the traditional Christian interpretation and are presented in a comprehensive map.

Literary works inspired by the seven deadly sins

* John Climacus (7th century) in ”The Ladder of Divine Ascent” places victory over the eight thoughts as individual steps of the thirty-step ladder: wrath (8), vainglory (10, 22), sadness (13), gluttony (14), lust (15), greed (16, 17), aced

* Dante’s (1265–1321) ”The Divine Comedy” is a three-part work composed of “Inferno”, “Purgatorio”, and “”Paradiso””. “Inferno” divides Hell into ”nine” concentric circles, four of which directly correspond to some of the deadly sins (Circle 2 to lust, 3 to gluttony, 4 to greed, and 5 to wrath, as well as sloth). The punishment of these two sins take place in the Stygian lake, the wrathful being punished atop the lake, attacking one another with the various members of their person, including fangs. The slothful are punished underneath the lake breathing sighs in bubbles, singing a dolorous song, as told by Virgil in Canto VII. The remaining circles do not neatly map onto the seven sins. In “Purgatorio”, Mount Purgatory is scaled in seven levels and follows the sin sequence of Aquinas (starting with pride).

* William Langland’s (c. 1332–1386) ”Vision of Piers Plowman” is structured around a series of dreams that are critical of contemporary errors while encouraging godly living. The sins are mentioned in this order: ”proud” (pride; Passus V, lines 62–71), ”lechour” (lecherousness; V. 71–74), ”envye” (envy; V. 75–132), ”wrathe” (wrath; V. 133–185), ”coveitise” (covetousness; V. 186–306), ”glutton” (gluttony; V. 307–385), ”sleuthe” (sloth; V. 386–453) (using the B-text).

* John Gower’s (1330–1408) ”Confessio Amantis” centres on a confession by Amans (“the Lover”) to Genius, the chaplain of the goddess Venus. Following confessional practice of the time, the confession is structured around the seven deadly sins, though focuses on his sins against the rules of courtly love.

* Geoffrey Chaucer’s (c. 1340–1400) ”Canterbury Tales” features the seven deadly sins in ”The Parson’s Tale”: pride (paragraphs 24–29), envy (30–31), wrath (32–54), sloth (55–63), greed (64–70), gluttony (71–74), lust (75–84).

* Christopher Marlowe’s (1564–1593) ”The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus” shows Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Mephistophiles coming from hell to show Dr. Faustus “some pastime” (Act II, Scene 2). The sins present themselves, in order: pride, greed, envy, wrath, gluttony, sloth, lust.

* Edmund Spenser’s (1552–1599), ”The Faerie Queene” addresses the seven deadly sins in “Book I (The Legend of the Knight of the Red Cross, Holiness)”: vanity/pride (Canto IV, stanzas 4–17), idleness/sloth (IV. 18-20), gluttony (IV. 21-23), lechery/lust (IV. 24-26), avarice/greed (IV. 27-29), envy (IV. 30-32), wrath (IV. 33-35).

* Garth Nix’s “The Keys to the Kingdom” is a seven-book children’s series in which the main nemesis of each book is afflicted by one of the seven deadly sins.

*Dale E Basye’s series starting with Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go contains one deadly sin in each book.

*A collection of ”Star Trek” stories, ”Star Trek: Seven Deadly Sins”, was recently released. It contains seven short novels, which link each deadly sin to a major Trek race: the Romulans (Pride), Borg (Gluttony), Klingons (Anger), Pakleds (Sloth), the Mirror Universe (Lust), the Ferengi (Greed), and the Cardassians (Envy).

*Author Caroline Myss, in her book ”Defy Gravity: Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason”, integrates the seven deadly sins as a key to understanding the spiritual underpinnings of healing. Her work proports that the “dark passions” of pride, avarice, luxury, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth are countered by the transformational power of the respective seven graces: reverence, piety, understanding, fortitude, counsel, knowledge, and wisdom.

*Modern artist Paul Cadmus painted a series of graphically disturbing, anthropomorphic depictions of the seven deadly sins, in the style of comic books. After his death, this series was willed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

*The album ”Heaven and Hell” by Joe Jackson is a modern musical interpretation of the seven deadly sins.

*The Tiger Lillies’s new album and stage show ”7 Deadly Sins” is based on the sins being experienced by a modernized version of Punch and Judy (in itself a reworking of Adam and Eve) called “Punch and Jude”.

*The album ”Melankolia / XXX Couture” by Danish rapper L.O.C. focuses on how the artist came into contact with each of the sins, and then how these sins have come to be culturally accepted.

*There was a series of seven silent films made in 1917 that bore the series title, ”The Seven Deadly Sins”, which began with ”Envy” (1917), continued with ”Pride” (1917), ”Greed” (1917), ”Sloth” (1917), ”Passion” (1917), and ”Wrath” (1917), and concluded with the synonymously titled ”The Seventh Sin” (1917). The final installment was given that title because ”Gluttony” was considered too offensive, and the producers couldn’t come up with an adequate synonym.

*The film ”The Devil’s Nightmare” is about a succubus who kills a group of tourists who are each guilty of one of the seven sins.

*In an episode of ”America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 4” each of the girls portrayed a deadly sin.

*In the Philippines TV series ”Lastikman” each major villain represents one of the deadly sins.

*In the Norwegian TV show ”De syv dødssyndene” (”The Seven Deadly Sins”), Christopher Schau attempts to invoke the wrath of God by carrying out each of the seven deadly sins. When Schau was talking about the show on the talk show ”Senkveld” (”Late Night”), he said “If I don’t end up in Hell, then there is no Hell.” The program caused a great deal of public debate surrounding the issue of censorship.

*In Matt Fraction’s comic book ”Casanova”, the series’ issues are named, in Latin, for each of the seven sins, beginning with ”Luxuria”.

*Rengoku II: The Stairway to Heaven is based on eight levels of a tower, seven named after the sins, the eighth being Paradise.

*In the webcomic Jack, the seven sins are personified by anthropomorphs. The main character, Jack, represents the sin of Wrath.

*Mark Watson Makes the World Substantially Better fits the sins into a six part BBC radio series, with Greed and Gluttony combined as the ‘similar sins’.

*In Knight Online’s Bifrost are monsters that can hunt for Fragments of the seven sins. Fragments can be turned into unique items, or collected to gain access to the chamber of Ultima.

*In 11eyes, the Black Knights are named Avaritia, Ira, Invidia, Acedia, Gula, and Superbia.

*In Umineko no Naku Koro ni, the Seven Stakes of Purgatory are named after Peter Binsfeld’s temptor demons and propagate or embody a deadly sin. Their ages follow the order of ”Purgatorio”, Lucifer (Pride) being the eldest and Asmodeus (Lust) the youngest.

* A Pakistani Musical Band “Meekal Hasan Band” portrayed the concept of the seven deadly sins in their music video titled “Chal Buleya”.

* Kansas State University geography research associate Thomas Vought presented his study “The Spatial Distribution of the Seven Deadly Sins Within Nevada”. In addition, the study covers some 3,000 counties across the country, and includes the interactive maps of sin distribution across the U.S.

The Child archetype, is an important Jungian archetype in Jungian psychology, first suggested by Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung. Recently, author Caroline Myss suggested Child, amongst four the Survival Archetypes (Victim, Prostitute, and Saboteur), present in all of us. It ranges from “childish to childlike longing for the innocent, regardless of age”, as mentioned in her work, ”Sacred Contracts”, which talk of the presence many aspects of the Child archetype, ranging from the ”Wounded Child”, ”Abandoned or Orphan Child”, ”Dependent Child”, ”Magical/Innocent Child”, ”Nature Child”, to the ”Divine Child” and ”Eternal Child”

There are no peer-reviewed scientific studies which support the claims of medical intuitives and one study concluded that “patients relying solely on psychic diagnosis as the basis for therapy are at risk of serious medical problems going undetected” (p.& 39). Intuitives have countered that, as a direct perception of truth independent of any reasoning process (i.e., epistemology of individual experience), medical intuition is not a science and cannot be tested scientifically. Further, some medical intuitives and other alternative medicine practitioners consider the reductionist nature of empirical scientific research to be hostile toward (while systematically suppressing) holistic and innovative challenges to conventional medicine, and incapable of detecting universal truths.

While the theoretical underpinnings of many alternative medical approaches are indeed untestable, the practices and hypotheses derived from practitioners’ believes can be subjected to experimental rigor. Regardless of whether intuition is considered a science, the claims made by medical intuitives, if true, should be relatively easy to demonstrate under controlled laboratory conditions: either intuitives can accurately diagnose a medically recognized illness at a rate more statistically significant than chance, or they cannot. Advocates of evidence-based medicine (EBM), such as the editors of the world’s two leading medical journals, JAMA and NEJM, recommend that all medical claims be subjected to randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials whenever possible. However far this goes to prove lack of scientific basis in the field of Intuitive Medicine it must be noted that most modern Medical Intuitives do not claim to be able to diagnose specific illnesses, and do not advocate alternative practices in place of conventional medicine. Instead, they work on determining key areas of concern for the patient from a holistic health practitioner’s point of view and make recommendations in regards to physical or psychological evaluation through a qualified individual (Medical Doctor, Chiropractor or a Naturopathic Doctor, etc.) as well as advice on general nutritional or life-style change.

Using the same structural idea as The OH Cards, and with a more recent history, Shadow Cards provide an electronic demonstration on how the combination of word and picture works, the but with a different process and simpler imagery (crayons rather than watercolour).

Many artists, writers, and people with distinct visions have explored the card deck as a vehicle for certain kinds of expression. Many decks lend themselves especially well to the practice of meditation. Visual images provide a rich focus for contemplation and gentle examination of undertones, overtones, similarities, contrasts, references. Some, like the microscope photographs of water crystals by Masuro Emoto seem devoid of literary references, others, such as Caroline Myss’s Archetype Cards are rich troves of mythical references, symbolism and depth psychology.

Cards of many kinds have been published under the aegis of New Age andAlternative Medicine. Many of them depend heavily on words, often inspirational, and the graphic element is secondary, illustrative. Many of these decks offeraffirmations. For example, Louise Hay’s Wisdom Cards can be accessed on–line. Very popular among affirmation users are the Angel Cards, developed by Kathy Tyler and Joy Drake. There are also two deck of cards published by [Findhorn Press], the Angels of Light cards authored by Diana Cooper, who also created the Atlantis Oracle Cards, and The Dragon Cards developed by Polly Waterfield.

Involved in the Pathwork process from its beginning in the 1960s, Martignoni was present at many of the lectures channeled by Eva Broch Pierrakos. Martignoni explored EST which became Landmark Education in the 1980s and was in charge of assistants in Connecticut. She was a member of the Albertson Memorial Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. As an artist Martignoni sought ways to unite human potential with art. She explored Zen drawing classes with therapist and poet [http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/books/books.php?id=3801 Gunilla Norris] and practiced a form of [http://www.paintingfromthesource.org/about.html ''Painting from the Source''], as created by Aviva Gold, with a group of women artists.

Influenced by writers Frederick Franck (”The Zen of Seeing”), Caroline Myss (”Anatomy of Spirit”) and Julia Cameron (”The Artist’s Way”), Martignoni began to use the power of art to connect people with their potential. In 1993 she drew her first Inner Portrait at age 74.

John Diamond, MD, (born August 9, 1934) graduated from Sydney University Medical School in 1957 and was awarded his Diploma in Psychological Medicine in 1962. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, a Foundation Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, American Holistic Medical Association, a Diplomat of the International College of Applied Kinesiology and is a Fellow and past-president of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine. He is an Honorary Advisor to the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation and its Japanese sister organization, The Koushikai Foundation.

Diamond is the founder of Life-Energy Analysis, a system based upon Applied Kinesiology (founded by George Goodheart).

He is also the author of bestsellers ”Your Body Doesn’t Lie” (originally released as ”Behavioral Kinesiology”), and ”Life Energy: Unlocking the Hidden Power of Your Emotions to Achieve Well-Being”. His recent book ”Facets of a Diamond: Reflections of a Healer” is endorsed by Bernie Siegel and Caroline Myss.

Diamond now practices as a Holistic Consultant in New York. He has founded The Institute for Music and Health and The Arts-Health Institute to train those interested in learning how to use the arts as a therapeutic modality.
