Origins

In its early stages of development Sufism effectively referred to nothing more than the internalization of Islam. According to one perspective, it is directly from the Qur’an, constantly recited, meditated, and experienced, that Sufism proceeded, in its origin and its development. Others have held that Sufism is the strict emulation of the way of Muhammad, through which the heart’s connection to the Divine is strengthened.

From the traditional Sufi point of view, the esoteric teachings of Sufism were transmitted from Muhammad to those who had the capacity to acquire the direct experiential gnosis of God, which was passed on from teacher to student through the centuries. Some of this transmission is summarized in texts, but most is not. Important contributions in writing are attributed to Uwais al-Qarni, Harrm bin Hian, Hasan Basri and Sayid ibn al-Mussib, who are regarded as the first Sufis in the earliest generations of Islam. Harith al-Muhasibi was the first one to write about moral psychology. Rabia Basri was a Sufi known for her love and passion for God, expressed through her poetry. Bayazid Bastami was among the first theorists of Sufism; he concerned himself with ”fanā” and ”baqā”, the state of annihilating the self in the presence of the divine, accompanied by clarity concerning worldly phenomena derived from that perspective.

Sufism had a long history already before the subsequent institutionalization of Sufi teachings into devotional orders (”tarîqât”) in the early Middle Ages. Almost

all extant Sufi orders trace their chains of transmission (”silsila”) back to Muhammad via his cousin and son-in-law Ali. The Naqshbandi order is a notable exception to this rule, as it traces the origin of its teachings from Muhammad to the first Islamic Caliph Abu Bakr.

Different devotional styles and traditions developed over time, reflecting the perspectives of different masters and the accumulated cultural wisdom of the orders. Typically all of these concerned themselves with the understanding of subtle knowledge (gnosis), education of the heart to purify it of baser instincts, the love of God, and approaching God through a well-described hierarchy of enduring spiritual stations (”maqâmât”) and more transient spiritual states (”ahwâl”).

Formalization of doctrine

Towards the end of the first millennium CE, a number of manuals began to be written summarizing the doctrines of Sufism and describing some typical Sufi practices. Two of the most famous of these are now available in English translation: the ”Kashf al-Mahjûb” of Hujwiri, and the ”Risâla” of Qushayri.

Two of Imam Al Ghazali’s greatest treatises, the “Revival of Religious Sciences” and the “Alchemy of Happiness,” argued that Sufism originated from the Qur’an and was thus compatible with mainstream Islamic thought, and did not in any way contradict Islamic Law—being instead necessary to its complete fulfillment. This became the mainstream position among Islamic scholars for centuries, challenged only recently on the basis of selective use of a limited body of texts. Ongoing efforts by both traditionally trained Muslim scholars and Western academics are making Imam Al-Ghazali’s works available in English translation for the first time, allowing readers to judge for themselves the compatibility between Islamic Law and Sufi doctrine.

Growth of Sufi influence in Islamic cultures

The spread of Sufism has been considered a definitive factor in the spread of Islam, and in the creation of integrally Islamic cultures, especially in Africa and Asia. Recent academic work on these topics has focused on the role of Sufism in creating and propagating the culture of the Ottoman world, and in resisting European imperialism in North Africa and South Asia.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries CE, Sufism produced a flourishing intellectual culture throughout the Islamic world, a “Golden Age” whose physical artifacts are still present. In many places, a lodge (known variously as a ”zaouia”, ”khanqah”, or ”tekke”) would be endowed through a pious foundation in perpetuity (”waqf”) to provide a gathering place for Sufi adepts, as well as lodging for itinerant seekers of knowledge. The same system of endowments could also be used to pay for a complex of buildings, such as that surrounding the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, including a lodge for Sufi seekers, a hospice with kitchens where these seekers could serve the poor and/or complete a period of initiation, a library, and other structures. No important domain in the civilization of Islam remained unaffected by Sufism in this period.

Contemporary Sufism

Currently active traditional Sufi teaching orders include the Naqshbandiyya Order led by Grandshiekh Nazim al-Qubrusi, which has worldwide affiliates.

Currently active Sufi academics and publishers include Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, Nuh Ha Mim Keller, Hamza Yusuf, and Abdal Hakim Murad

In South Asia, Sufi orders include the Qadiriyyah, the Sarwari Qadiri, the Chishti Order, the Maizbhandaria, the Suhrawardiyya, the Barelwis and the Deobandi.

Sufism is popular in such African countries as Senegal, where it is seen as a mystical expression of Islam. Mbacke suggests that one reason Sufism has taken hold in Senegal is because it can accommodate local beliefs and customs, which tend toward the mystical.

Sufism suffered many setbacks in the modern era, particularly (though not exclusively) at the hands of European imperialists in the colonized nations of Asia and Africa. The life of the Algerian Sufi master Emir Abd al-Qadir is instructive in this regard. Notable as well are the lives of Amadou Bamba and Hajj Umar Tall in sub-Saharan Africa, and Sheikh Mansur Ushurma and Imam Shamil in the Caucasus region. In the twentieth century some more modernist Muslims have called Sufism a superstitious religion that holds back Islamic achievement in the fields of science and technology.

For a more complete summary of currently active groups and teachers, readers are referred to links in the site of Dr. Alan Godlas of the University of Georgia.

A number of Westerners have embarked with varying degrees of success on the path of Sufism. One of the first to return to Europe as an official representative of a Sufi order, and with the specific purpose to spread Sufism in Western Europe, was the Swedish-born wandering Sufi Abd al-Hadi Aqhili (also known as Ivan Aguéli). The ideas propagated by such spiritualists may or may not conform to the tenets of Sufism as understood by orthodox Muslims, as for instance with G. I. Gurdjieff.

Other noteworthy Sufi teachers who were active in the West in recent years include Bawa Muhaiyaddeen, Nader Angha, Sheikh Abdullah Sirr-Dan Al-Jamal, Inayat Khan, Javad Nurbakhsh, Bulent Rauf, Irina Tweedie, Idries Shah and Muzaffer Ozak.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Sufism, under the G. Bollywood is the international and the most popular definition of the Hindi language movie sector in India, which is perhaps one of the world?s largest too. Selling a billion more tickets annually than Hollywood, Bollywood showcases themes from all over the world.

The Hindi film industry has now led fans of this popular cine culture to experience fresher climes in the Finnish Lapland of Rovaniemi and Poland (Fanaa), Victoria in Australia (Salaam Namaste), Korea (Gangster), Brazil (Dhoom II), Kandahar and Kabul (Kabul Express), Ras Al Khaimah (Deewane Hue Pagal, 36 China Town) and Malaysia (Don II). The trend which began with ?Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in the 90?s lapping up the UK and Swiss borders has now transcended its? boundaries across the Atlantic to New York with Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna and Kaal Ho Na Ho.

As Dubai along with Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, Hong Kong and Singapore get added as new destinations to the Mumbai film repertoire, Tourism Boards the world over along with Mumbai and India are clamoring for a slice of the Indian film industry which is expected to cross a turnover of Rs140 billion, as per a KPMG consultancy report. Kashmir and Kerala have given way to world destinations as more producers go westwards to film their movie musicals.

The Indian Tourism Ministry and the Maharashtra government too have pulled up their socks and are looking to create private or public partnerships to promote Bollywood Tourism, especially in the U

nited Kingdom which has already worked out a counter tourism strategy to lure Hindi film fans.

The British move is to allow Hindi film buffs to walk the paths of the now famous British locales of London, Scotland and Yorkshire and relive their favorite Bollywood?s filmy moments. With Indias? official carrier proposing to add new flights on to the London and Europe sector to rope in the large Indian expatriate community, Britain?s Tourism department is already pitching high on Bollywood through the sale and distribution of an innovative ?Bollywood Map of Britain?, with dozens of dots that identify now-seen scenes from Hindi blockbusters- locations such as the Blenheim Palace, Waddesden Manor- used extensively for the shots of Kabhie Khushie Kabhie Gham (K3G) and many more such spots made famous in Bollywood movies.

In the recent past, Hong Kong recorded a 24.7 per cent growth in visitors from India and this has led the tourism board to learn certain movie making linkages between Mumbai and Hong Kong which has plans to develop destination and tour packages revolving around Bollywood and also market the extensive production centers in Hong Kong to Indian movie makers. The Singapore Tourism Board in 2006 launched a ?KKrissh? tour package.

The Swiss success of Bollywood has now trickled onto Finland and the Finnish Tourism Board (FTB) had in the recent past organized programs for Bollywood?s dream merchants to familiarize themselves with Finland. The FTB proposes to give location subsidies. Other sops and easy permissions to set up cameras and shots in Finland are being studied. The idea of the FTB is to sell the midnight sun and Northern Lights of the archipelago and bring it under Bollywood?s arch lights. With a direct flight o Helsinki from India, it?s only a wait and watch scene with Bollywood fans adding Santa land to their holiday destination!

With film festivals and awards shows the rage of the times, more and more countries are offering their destination points to set shop for Bollywood?s pre and post productions, also setting aside budgets for awards and glitterati shows. The Malaysian Government had set aside about $US 2.7 million to host the 2006 Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA) thus pushing up sales for Malaysia as a prime Bollywood destination, already made famous in a host of Hindi films.

Only recently some private tour operators in Mumbai have understood the need to tap the ?Bollywood? bug as part of their Mumbai ?Darshan? packages. Such operators charge around US $100 or rupees 3900 per head for a day?s guided studio tour with or without lunch packages. The experience gets tourists closer to understanding the nuances and technicalities of running one of India’s largest and most glamorous industries.

The trip includes either a film studio or a television soap shoot on location at one of the studios. Tourists get to watch actors and technicians create scenes most fans might already be aware of in the real set, setting off a de ja vu appeal.

Sometimes, a post-production studio experience is thrown in where tourists learn and see in-situ dubbing, sound-editing and some other special effects that are added to movies. As most live studios in Mumbai are not open to viewing for the general public, it is left to the individual tour operators to work out their contracts with the studios they have a nexus with. Filmistan studio is one of the more popular studios open to public.

However, to really thrive on the real Indian movie experience, Tollywood or the Southern Hyderabad based film industry is the place to be. With Mumbai belting out Hindi movies, Telegu, the second most widely spoken language in South India adds to the splendor and glamour of Tollywood.

Producing over 150 feature films a year in and around the new emerging IT hub in Hyderabad, it is worth a visit to Ramoji City -one of the largest filmmaking complexes in the world. With more than 1,600 acres of ply streetscapes, sound stages, warehouses, post-production facilities, hotels, restaurants Ramoji City is modeled as theme park and has been adjudged by the Guinness Book of World record as a complete tinsel town. Ramoji City is akin to experiencing movie magic and ?real time? scenes recreated as in the Universal Studios or a Disney or MGM studio in the West. With an entry fee of rupees 250 or $US 5, it?s an experience which Mumbai is yet to reel on!

Not so long ago I wrote about the Da Vinci Code causing a big stink here in India. That bubble has just about burst and lo behold we have another film causing a stir. The film Fanaa (Destruction) has got the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in Gujarat in a twist. Well it?s not exactly a problem with the film but with its main actor Aamir Khan.

You see Aamir Khan has recently had a stint at being a social activist. He made the mistake of speaking his mind in the world?s largest democracy. It all began with people protesting against raising the height of the Narmada Dam which we in India supposedly need to meet our insatiable demand for energy particularly in this case ? electricity. The protestors are demanding proper rehabilitation for the thousands of people that have been displaced because of this mammoth project. Aamir Khan joined in to give their demands a louder voice. That did it.

The right wing ruling Hindu party in Gujarat the BJP has banned all products endorsed by the actor including Coca Cola and Toyota cars and also his latest film release Fanaa. This does not in anyway represent the will of the general public in the state nor does it make much sense. The movie was released a few days ago in the rest of the country and has got a good response.

When will our political parties realize that the people no longer get excited about these frenzied agitations, which lack any real depth and are done just for show. The losers in this case are only the people of Gujarat. They need to realize that speaking one?s mind on any issue facing the p<div

We cannot censure people in society just because we don?t like what they say.

Fanaa is about the relationship between a blind girl and an undercover terrorist. It has nothing against the state or people of Gujarat. Why then should it be banned? It is mainstream cinema that will do well or not on its own strengths as a film. This entire furor is hype generated by two bit politicians mainly for their fifteen minutes of fame.

For all those hot heads seeking a ban on an actor or any person for that matter, who uses his or her freedom of speech, may we remind them that maybe they are living in the wrong part of the world here. I would suggest a mass migration to a much cooler locale, for instance North Korea.

Sasha Masand

Author Bio
Sasha Masand the founder of Indian Voice Overs is an award winning Television Producer who has been part of the Indian media industry for over twelve years.

No related posts.

Kajol – Sizzling your Screens Part 2

Fanaa

Arts and entertainment

Kajol

Kajol gallery

Kajol images

Kajol photos

Kajol wallpaper

Movies tv
<guid

FANAA IS THE new-breed cinema of Bollywood that tries to mix the glamour of film industry with the realities of life. It will be fair to say that this film turns its subject into fantasy and weaves it with music and dance, but when it comes to the dénouement, the film holds the values that are inherent in the Indian mindset regarding Kashmir. The film relies heavily on subtle metaphors.

Fanaa is a film about a blind woman from Kashmir, played by the renowned actress Kajol. And, this time the Indian filmmakers have substituted Poland, or such exotic European locations, for Kashmir. Her parents are off and indulge in poetry. She goes with a troupe to perform at the Republic Day function in New Delhi. There, she falls in love with a playboy, played by Aamir Khan. He brings back her eyesight, but before she can see him he disappears. After that, the real face of her lover is uncovered. He actually works for an international ?terrorist? group. And, he is with Kajol to fulfil his mission. And, he counts his mission to be the most important thing in his life. Circumstances bring them face-to-face again after several years, and finally the climax is quite reminiscent of Bollywood hits, like Mother India and Shakti.

Khan is turning out to be next Mr Bharat after Manoj Kumar. All his films of the past seven years, barring Mela and Dil Chahata Hai, were patriotic in nature. Fanaa, directed by Kunal Kohli and produced under the Yash Raj banner, is set in the backdrop of Kashmir. And, it is Kashmir of only four people, who are pitted against Khan. The fil

m does not show the disgruntled Kashmiri to have any aim. He vaguely fights for an international ?terrorist? group. He is sophisticated and suave, flirtatious but deadly. Love, family and children do not matter to him. But, the reasons for his choices and condition in life are never mentioned. Therefore, the viewer takes him to be confused, which is again a cunning metaphor.

Kohli has tried to keep the screenplay of Fanaa ambiguous, which helps to hold the interest of the audience but drags at the climax. But, it has become a speciality of the Yash Raj banner. The music of Jatin-Lalit, which incidentally is the duo?s last combined effort, is a disappointment. The close-ups of Khan reveal the ageing star. But, his looks are quite refreshing, while Kajol is as effervescent as she was in her last hit Kabhi Khushi, Kabhi Gham. It has breath-taking stunts in snow, and its locales are quite astounding. The chemistry between Khan and Kajol is outstanding, particularly towards the dénouement. The film broke the box office record in the first week by collecting a whopping Rs 33 crores.

It is another Bollywood potboiler that circumvents the Kashmir issue and reaffirms what other Bollywood films convey: women and middle-aged men against militants. Interestingly, only Kashmiri women are allowed to perform at the Republic Day function in the film, while a Kashmiri man when given entry causes devastation. The other lacuna, which is common to the most Bollywood films made on the Kashmir issue, is the complete absence of the aspirations of the Kashmiri masses, their sufferings and the heavy emotional and physical pain they undergo.

Like the other Yash Raj films it is a fairytale story sewed with the emotionality of a Kashmiri backdrop. Do not get surprised if this film becomes a cult for filmmakers. As said earlier, the director has used metaphors quite stunningly and cunningly. One cannot help but fault the ill-defined patriotism of the movie.

But, Fanaa has succeeded where other mainstream films have failed. For the first time in the history of Indian cinema one hears about Kashmiris being deprived of the promised referendum. Secondly, it is shown a ?terrorist? group operating in Kashmir is not controlled by Pakistan. The film goes one step ahead by showing an understanding between the two countries on terrorism.

The film acknowledges the use of popular entertainment as means of political mobilisation or propaganda. The best popular films are being crafted with a dangerous liaison of fact and fantasy, which confuses the audience and easily leads it astray. It is in such a context that films like Fanaa from Bollywood need to be assessed before we watch them.

Inam Ul Rehman

Author Bio
You can read about citizen journalism in india on <a
